Darin Chamberlin: Forty Years of Chasing the Shot From Above

Darin Chamberlin has wanted a camera in the sky for about 40 years. Long before you could buy a drone at a big-box store, he wanted to see his projects, his town and the places he traveled from above.

So he improvised. He tied his iPhone to kites and to balloons and sent it up to try to get the shot. It swung, it spun, and the pictures were mostly sky and string. It barely worked, but now and then a frame showed what the view from above could be, and that kept him at it.

When small drones arrived, he started with toy models and learned to fly the hard way. Then he bought better ones, then better again, and spent years learning light, weather, airspace and how to fly smoothly enough for photos worth keeping. His library now runs from fireworks over the Cedar River and sprint cars at Knoxville to the La Jolla coast and Clearwater Beach at sunset.

Darin has held the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, the certificate required to fly drones for hire, for many years.

Proof of insurance: coming soon. We'll post it here.

Every pilot we connect you with holds an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Pilots must show a current Part 107 certificate before they receive requests.

42 years in business

Darin founded Landforms Design in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1984 and has run it for 42 years. Landscape design taught him to look at a property as a whole: how the land moves, where water goes, how a home sits among its trees. That's the same eye he brings to aerial work.

Why this site

People ask him the same questions over and over: where can I fly, which drone should I buy, and can you come shoot my place? This site answers all three. The rules pages link every rule to its source. The shop lists gear he trusts. And the booking form gets your request to the right pilot: Darin himself in Eastern Iowa, or a local Part 107 pilot anywhere else in the US.
